Hash Generator

This free hash generator turns any text into MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and other hash values instantly in your browser. Developers and system administrators use hashes to verify file integrity, check data fingerprints, and work with checksums — paste your text below, pick the algorithm, and copy the result.

How to use the hash generator

  1. Type or paste the text you want to hash into the input box.
  2. Choose the algorithm you need — MD5 for quick checksums, SHA-256 for stronger fingerprints.
  3. Your hash appears instantly; most tools update it as you type.
  4. Compare it carefully with the expected value if you are verifying data — even one different character means the data is not identical.
  5. Click copy to use the hash in your code, documentation, or verification step.
  6. Change the input or algorithm any time; there are no limits.

What is a hash?

A hash is a fixed-length string of characters produced by a mathematical function from any input — a word, a sentence, or a whole file. The same input always produces the same hash, and even a tiny change to the input produces a completely different-looking result. Think of it as a fingerprint for data. If a file’s fingerprint matches the one the sender published, the file arrived untouched. If a single character differs, something changed along the way. Crucially, hashing is one-way: you cannot turn a hash back into the original text, which is why hashes are used to store password verifiers and confirm integrity without exposing the data itself.

MD5 vs SHA: choosing the right hash algorithm

MD5 produces a 32-character hexadecimal hash. It is very fast and still widely used for simple checksums — confirming a download was not corrupted, or spotting duplicate files. However, MD5 is no longer considered safe against deliberate tampering, because researchers have shown different inputs can be crafted to share the same MD5 hash. Never use MD5 alone to protect passwords or security decisions.

SHA-1 produces a 40-character hash and was once the web’s standard, but it has also been shown to be breakable in controlled demonstrations, so modern systems have moved on. SHA-256, part of the SHA-2 family, produces a 64-character hash and remains a trusted default for file verification, digital signatures support, and secure systems. When in doubt, generate SHA-256 — it costs nothing extra here, and it is the algorithm other tools will most likely expect.

Hash examples to try

Hash the word `hello` and you get MD5 `5d41402abc4b2a76b9719d911017c592` and SHA-256 `2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824`. Now change one letter to `Hello` with a capital H. The MD5 becomes `8b1a9953c4611296a827abf8c47804d7` — completely different from a one-letter change. This sensitivity is called the avalanche effect, and it is what makes hashes such reliable change detectors for developers, testers, and anyone verifying downloads.

Frequently asked questions about hash generation

Can a hash be reversed back to the original text?

No. Hash functions are designed to be one-way. The only way to “undo” one is to guess inputs and hash them until you find a match, which is practical only for very short, common inputs. That is why strong password storage adds techniques beyond a plain hash.

Is MD5 safe to use?

For casual checksums and spotting accidental corruption or duplicates, MD5 is fine and fast. For anything security-related — passwords, certificates, tamper protection — use SHA-256 or stronger, because MD5 collisions can be deliberately created.

Why does my hash not match the expected value?

The most common reasons are an invisible difference in the input: a trailing space or line break, different capitalization, or a file saved with different encoding. Re-copy the exact text, and make sure you selected the same algorithm on both sides.

Does this hash generator upload my text?

No. The hashing happens in your browser. Your text — including any sample data you are testing — never leaves your device and is never stored.
