This free final grade calculator answers the question every student asks before finals week: what score do I need on my final exam? Enter your current grade, the grade you want, and how much the final exam counts, and the tool tells you the exact score you need — nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.
How to Use the Final Grade Calculator
- Enter your current grade in the course, as a percentage (for example 85).
- Enter the final course grade you want (for example 90).
- Enter the weight of the final exam — the percentage of your course grade it decides (for example 40).
- Click the button. The final grade calculator shows the exact final exam score you need, plus a table of what your course grade would be with different final scores.
The Final Grade Formula
The final grade calculator uses one simple formula. Required final score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. In plain words: the final exam must cover the gap between where you are and where you want to be, and a heavier final exam makes each point on it worth more.
Say your current grade is 85%, you want 90%, and the final counts for 40% of the course. The calculation is (90 − 85 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = (90 − 51) ÷ 0.4 = 97.5%. You need 97.5% on the final. If the answer comes out above 100%, the target is out of reach even with a perfect final — the tool tells you that honestly, and shows the best course grade a 100% final would give.
What Is a Final Grade?
Your final grade is the weighted average of everything in the course — homework, quizzes, midterms and the final exam — where each part counts according to its weight. That is why a 40% final exam can lift or sink a grade far more than a 10% quiz. If your school uses letters instead of percentages, check how grading works at your school first, then convert your letter grades to percentages before using the tool.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still pass if I failed the midterm?
Often yes. Enter your real current grade and the final weight — the final grade calculator shows exactly what the final must be. A heavy final (40–50%) leaves a lot of room to recover.
What if the score I need is above 100%?
Then that target grade is mathematically impossible. Lower the target by a few points, or check whether extra credit or a dropped lowest score can raise your current grade first.
Does the final grade calculator work for weighted categories?
Yes, as long as you know your current overall grade and the final exam’s weight. If your teacher has not published the weights, ask for the syllabus breakdown first — wrong weights give wrong answers.
Is my grade data stored anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
